It’s no surprise that I love Christmas time! (Who’s with me??) I love pulling out all my Christmas decor and how it makes my home feel so cozy! This year, I purged a lot of my old decor and replaced it with a more simple, modern farmhouse look. I’m loving it! I’m using a lot of natural, winter greenery with pops of buffalo plaid! Are you as much in love with buffalo check as I am?? 🙂 You can check out our Christmas tree here!

How many days is it until Christmas?
Do you hear that question constantly from your kids all through December?? 😉 That’s one reason why I love having an advent calendar—we all know exactly how many days until Christmas and it adds to the excitement! This year, I wanted one that would go with my new farmhouse style, so I began looking for some DIY Christmas countdown ideas.
Make your own advent calendar
I also knew that I wanted to use red buffalo plaid fabric, and I wanted it to have nice, clean lines and be on the larger size. This is what I came up with! And I LOVE it!
How to make an advent calendar with fabric
This is super easy to make.
- I got 1/2″ thick MDF at Home Depot and cut it down to 21″ x 34″.
- Then, I stapled my red buffalo plaid fabric to the board.
- Glue on your close pins and you’re done! I did 6 rows of 4 and used five minute epoxy. I lucked out and found my close pins with numbers at Hobby Lobby. They don’t have them online 🙁 If you can’t find any you can always grab some regular small ones at Amazon and write the numbers on your card!
- Add a pom pom garland if you’d like! You can see how I made mine here.
What to put in your advent calendar?
There are lot’s of things you can put on your advent calendar! I decided to cut a 3×5 card in half….I know, super fancy! But it works 🙂 On the back I have written down an act of service that we can do that day as a family! We are using the #LightTheWorld campaign at mormon.org. It’s been a wonderful way for our family to focus on what Christmas is all about and grow closer together! Get yours here!
I hope you try this and make your own advent calendar this year! And don’t forget to check out my Pinterest Christmas board for lots more great ideas for the holidays!
