I love fireplaces! I know that not everyone likes them, but I’ve always felt that they make a home feel more “homey” π So, when we moved into our new-to-us house, I was so excited that it had a fireplace in the basement! The part that I wasn’t so excited about was that it looked like this:

Not quite the look I was hoping for π But luckily, to paint your brick fireplace is an easy DIY project that anyone can do! My mom is a saint and was the one who actually painted our fireplace for us before we moved in. Isn’t she the best??
The paint color I chose for our fireplace was Behr’s Elephant Skin, with a satin finish. (You can get it here.) Grey is a tricky color to work with, and I LOVE this shade of grey, because it actually looks like grey in pretty much any lighting.
I get a ton of questions about the paint colors we used for this project–the mantle is also Behr: Clear Moon with a semi gloss paint. You can get that one here! PLUS you can see how we built and installed our new mantle, check it out here! It was super easy!!

Paint Your Brick Fireplace in 2 Easy Steps
Step One: Cleaning
The brick and mortar need to be cleaned with a stiff wire brush. (The one we used can be found here.) As you brush everything down, be careful that you’re not brushing it too hard-you don’t want the mortar to break away! After you’ve brushed it down, vacuum up the mess! Easy!
Step Two: Paint
Grab your paint and brush and get at it! We used this brush by Purdy, but any brand will do. As you paint, make sure you get into all the little nooks and crannies–brick and mortar is not smooth! We actually only did ONE coat of paint! Just let it dry, and then touch up any areas that may have been missed, and you are DONE!
Super quick and easy! Who knew that to paint your brick fireplace would be so simple? I love the huge impact this update has had on our basement! It took this room right out of the 80’s and now it has a clean, fresh look that will be stylish for a long time to come.
PS- Don’t forget to check out how we built and installed our mantle!

I absolutely LOVE the color grey so I’m in heaven with this fireplace. What finish did you use on the paint?
Nicole says
Thank you! I know, I love this color grey so much! It’s actually elephant skin by Behr. http://www.behr.com/consumer/ColorDetailView/PPU18-16 And that’s all we did–just one layer π I’ve been meaning to link to that color in the post, I’ll get that done this weekend!

Love this idea! Just wondering what kind of paint you used? Just a basic latex wall paint?
Thanks π

loureh@optonline.net can i paint a red brick fireplace white if there is glass windows next to fireplace that show the red brick fireplace exterior? i am afraid the white interior brick will look funny if you could see the red brick through the windows.Windows are located on either side of fireplace.
