Does anybody out there hate their couch?? A lot of us do. But couches are a pretty big investment, and not everyone has the means to replace their couch whenever they feel like it. (Wouldn’t that be the life?!) So, for those of us who are stuck for the moment, here are some ways to decorate a couch you hate.
Tips to Decorate a Couch
Slipcovers
Slipcovers are not my favorite option. I think they generally look pretty bad, unless you can get one that fits like a glove! Chelsea, over at Making Home Base, found a used Ikea couch on Craigslist and got the slipcover that was made for it. It looks amazing!
Embrace the Pattern
I think this is a great and unique time to decorate in, because honestly, anything goes! If you have a couch with a pattern you don’t like, just choose to love it and decorate around it. Pick out one or two colors from the couch, or one or two that complement it, and find throw pillows in those colors that you can decorate with.
Mix and Match Pillows
I love throw pillows. I can’t seem to get enough. Instead of choosing pillows that are all the same size and all solid colors, mix and match with size, color, pattern and even texture. If you really hate the pattern/color on your couch, choose oversized throw pillows to help cover what you don’t like. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference they will make! PS-check out my post on 40 Throw Pillow Combos! It’s a great place to start.
Use Throw Blankets
I also love throws! If you have a brightly colored couch or one with lots of pattern, try choosing a neutral throw to help tone it down. If you have a boring couch, try choosing a throw with color, pattern, or texture–or even all three! Experiment with different ways to drape it on your couch in a way that you like. I seem to always be changing it up!
Decorate Around the Couch
One key way to decorate a couch, is to remember to add accents around it. Add a coffee table, a rug, and a gallery wall above it. This will help to complement your couch and bring more interest to your space.
It can be super frustrating to live with furniture you don’t like! Try these tips, decorate a couch you hate and make it something you can love! (Or at least like until you can get that new couch! 😉 )

I love that my couch pulls out to a bed but I hate that it’s hunter green. I will try mix and match pillows to break it up!

I hope it helps and that you’ll love how it looks afterwards!

I have so many blankets on my couch and not enough pillows. I can’t seem to find the perfect one’s when I’m out shopping so I think I need to start looking online instead.

That’s what I’ve started doing, because I was feeling the same way!

Such great tips. I am not a fan of slipcovers either, but if you can get one that fits just right (which is almost impossible it seems) you can’t even tell it’s there.
